The President made news on Monday when he inadvertently let a news microphone pick up his negotiations with Russian President Medvedev over the subject of the European missile defense system. President Obama implied that he would be willing to kill the missile shield program once his re-election campaign is over and he is safely back in the White House.
It’s no surprise that President Obama would be willing to kill the life-saving program. American leftists have been fighting against the idea of a missile shield ever since President Reagan first proposed it on March 23 of 1983.
In his appropriately titled book Dupes, historian Paul Kengor devotes a whole chapter to the American “Peace” movement that fought to protect the Soviet Union’s ability to threaten us with a nuclear holocaust. Senator Ted Kennedy named President Reagan’s proposed SDI system Star Wars, in mocking reference to the sci-fi movie. The Soviet soon started using Kennedy’s name for the program in all their propaganda.
The Soviet news agency TASS soon started calling Reagan’s purely defensive missile shield a “space weapon,” and calling it a “militarization of space.” SDI, said TASS, was a program to build “strike weapons systems in space aimed at targets not only in earth orbit, but also on the ground.”
Soon the liberals on the editorial staff of the New York Times were claiming that “The purpose” of the SDI “is not to keep the Soviets from threatening us, but to make sure we can threaten them.”
It’s amazing how consistently wrong liberals are, decade after decade.
